Numbness from the anesthetic may last approximately 2 hours after surgery.
Bite on gauze pad for 20 minutes. If bleeding persists, place a new pad over the area. If you change the pad too often, bleeding may be prolonged. It is normal for the saliva to be streaked with blood for the first day.
Keep fingers and tongue away from area.
To reduce swelling, place an ice pack on the area for 15 minutes on and then 15 minutes off for the first day.
Do not rinse your mouth until the end of the day after surgery. Then rinse with warm salt water. Continue rinses for several days.
To promote healing, gently brush the area to remove plaque.
Do not drink from a straw for the first 24 hours, it creates suction and may loosen the blood clot.
No smoking for 24 hours.
Avoid sports and strenuous activity for 24 hours.
Mild pain medication may be required. If pain persists, please call the office.
If stitches were placed, please make an appointment to have them removed in one week.
