When a person wears dentures for the first time, he or she is normally taken aback by an improved appearance. Dentures are custom made for each person from fine, lifelike materials such as porcelain and gum-colored acrylics. While dentures look amazing, it does take time to get used to the way they fit and feel. If you have questions about dentures and comfort, call our office to consult with our dentist.
Wearing Dentures in an Adjustment
It’s important to know that getting adjusted to your dentures could take a couple weeks. Wearing dentures will feel comfortable once a person becomes used to wearing his or her prosthetics.
Dentures are worn over the gums. They hug the curve of the jawbone so that they stay in place. Even though dentures look beautiful, it does take time to get accustomed to the weight of prosthetics.
Knowing that this adjustment period takes a couple weeks can make the process of acclimating to prosthetic teeth easier. One way to make the adjustment period more comfortable is to remember to take out dentures every four hours for a few minutes so that the gums can rest. Avoid the temptation to leave your dentures out longer than recommended as this will prolong the adjustment process.
Practice Makes Oral Function More Perfect
Sometimes people feel self-conscious when they first speak and eat with their new teeth. This is only natural and feeling self-conscious will subside once you become used to your dentures.
As you are adjusting to your new teeth, consider taking opportunities to practice wearing your dentures in the privacy of your home. For instance, you can introduce new foods as you’re learning to use your new teeth. You can also sing along to songs at home so that you can learn to speak easily with your dentures.
