Gingival recession refers to a condition in which your gums pull away from your teeth due to gum disease. Your dentist evaluates your teeth at each visit to determine if your gums have begun to recede. If you experience gingival recession, it’s very important to have it treated to prevent tooth loss.
Long-Term Problems of Gingival Recession
Gingival recessions starts when pockets develop between the roots of your teeth and your gums. Your dental hygienist measures these pockets with a special tool whenever you visit the dental office. If they become too deep—about five millimeters—they’re considered problematic, and your dentist will recommend treatment.
Recession can become even more serious if left untreated. If the gums continue to recede, your tooth roots will be exposed, leading to severe discomfort as well as leaving the roots vulnerable to wear and other types of damage. Eventually, your teeth will become loose and require extraction or even fall out if your gums are not treated.
Treatment for Gingival Recession
Receding gums are much easier to treat if they are diagnosed and treated while the problem has not yet become severe. Recession often begins with a simple inflammation of the gums, which can be treated easily with a baking soda toothpaste or another anti-inflammation treatment recommended by your dentist. If you experience any symptoms of inflammation, bring them to your dentist’s attention. Symptoms can include:
- Bleeding when you brush or floss
- Red or swollen gums
- Discomfort in the gums
- Sensitivity along the gumline
If your gums have severely receded, more aggressive treatment may be necessary. This can include intensive cleaning, such as root planing, or gum grafting. In gum grafting, tissue is harvested from another part of the mouth—usually the palate—and used to augment the gum tissue so the tooth roots are covered. Although you might not want to face the prospect of deep cleaning or gum surgery, it’s much better to have these treatments than to lose your teeth.
