Botox is an injectable treatment that temporarily paralyzes muscles. It is used to treat deep lines and wrinkles in the face and can also help in treatment of temporomandibular joint disorder. Your cosmetic dentist might use Botox to help you improve your appearance or to reduce your discomfort from jaw misalignment.
What is Botox? Botox is a highly refined form of a botulism toxin.
How is Botox administered? It is injected into specific areas with very fine needles. Usually, treatment is performed without anesthetic, since the needles are so thin that the discomfort is minimal. A cosmetic Botox treatment takes fifteen minutes to an hour, depending upon the number of injections.
What are the effects of Botox? It causes temporary paralysis in the muscles where it is injected. This allows muscles to relax, easing the tension on certain joints or reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
What issues is Botox used to treat? This can ease the appearance of deep lines in the face, especially those between the eyebrows and from the nose to the corners of the mouth. It can also help treat muscle spasms. In treating TMJ, it can be injected into the jaw muscles, causing them to relax so the jaw joint will settle into the proper alignment.
How long do the effects of Botox last? The effects of Botox are temporary, lasting several weeks to a few months. You can return to your cosmetic dentist for touchup treatments to maintain the effects in the long term.
How long after treatment will I see results? You’ll see a difference right away, but the full results won’t be visible for a few days as the treatment takes effect.
How should I prepare for Botox treatment? No special preparation is necessary for routine Botox treatment. Talk to your cosmetic dentist about using local anesthetic, which is usually unnecessary for injectable cosmetic treatments.
