Invisalign: What is the Treatment Process?

Invisalign is an increasingly popular approach to orthodontic treatment, especially for adults. Because it uses plastic trays instead of conventional metal braces, it is virtually invisible and allows you to go about your everyday life without inconvenience or self-consciousness.

How Invisalign Works

Invisalign uses a series of clear plastic trays, each one contoured slightly differently, to move your teeth gradually into the proper position. Your cosmetic dentist takes molds and digital pictures of your teeth and uses these to create the trays. The last tray you wear will move your teeth into the final, optimal position, giving you a perfect smile.

Many people like this option because it is convenient, and it’s not immediately obvious to other people that you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. The trays can be removed from time to time, as long as you wear them at least 22 hours each day. So for special occasions, you can remove them for short periods.

Precautions to Take with Invisalign

As with traditional braces, there are some precautions you should observe during Invisalign treatment. The plastic trays will stain, so avoid staining agents while you are wearing them. Hot liquids can cause the trays to warp, so that they won’t move your teeth into the correct position or might not even fit properly in your mouth. You should also be sure to clean them regularly to keep food, beverages, or bacteria from collecting inside them. This could cause tooth decay, ruining the teeth you’re trying to treat.

In general, you should wear the trays regularly, remove them if you drink hot beverages, and rinse them thoroughly after each meal. Your cosmetic dentist will provide guidelines for how to care for your trays, ensuring the best possible results from your treatment.
