The process of dental bonding is using composite resin to apply a very thin coating of the material to mask the dental deficiency. The bonding material starts out as a soft malleable substance that can be closely matched to the natural shade of the tooth being repaired.

The tooth is prepared by your cosmetic dentist using an instrument to lightly rough up the surface of the tooth and placing a liquid that works like a bonding agent to aid in the adherence of the dental bond itself.

By placing the bonding material on the tooth, your cosmetic dentist will be able to mold the resin to the desired shape on the tooth. Once satisfied that the bonding material is correct, the resin is hardened on the tooth with the use of a curing light or laser and polished to match the surrounding teeth.

Composite resin is the same material used to correct dental decay; however, the process is somewhat different than when used for dental bonding.

Dental bonding can usually be completed in one dental visit and is an excellent alternative to veneers or dental crowns in that it is a more economical choice and is a much less invasive procedure. Very little of the tooth’s enamel is disturbed to place dental bonding.

Caring for teeth after the bonding procedure is no different than the normal daily habits of flossing and brushing. The composite resin used in dental bonding is resistant to stain, but diligent daily care is required to keep stain at bay. Twice annual visits to your dental provider for a professional cleaning and exam will help ensure your dental bonding will keep your new smile bright for many years.
