Can I Still Use an Electronic Toothbrush after Dental Implant Surgery?
Before, during, and after dental implant surgery, it is important to keep your teeth and mouth clean. There is no reason you can’t use your usual electronic toothbrush after dental implants have been placed and have healed, but you should observe some precautions during the healing process.
Caring for Your Dental Implants
Dental implants are secured in your jawbone and function just like your natural teeth. They are permanent and do not move in your mouth. Although implants cannot suffer from decay, they can collect food particles and plaque just like natural teeth and should be cleaned on a regular basis to prevent plaque and tartar buildup.
After implants have been placed and have completely healed, you can clean them with any normal toothbrush, including your electronic toothbrush. You’ll also floss and make regular dental appointments to ensure all your remaining natural teeth are healthy and that your gums are in good shape. If your particular type of implant requires a certain type of care, your implant dentist will provide you with instructions. An example might be an implant that is used to support a removable denture.
Caring for Implants during the Healing Process
While your dental implants are healing, you’ll have to be more careful about how you clean your mouth. Your gums where the implants were inserted will require special care so you don’t inadvertently injure them. As with any surgical procedure, you’ll want to care for the incisions to prevent infection, excessive bleeding, or other complications.
Your dentist will provide guidelines for how to care for your mouth while it heals. This will probably involve using a rinse for a few days and slowly graduating to brushing and other normal activities. If you follow these guidelines, you’ll increase the chances that your implant procedure will be successful in the long term.
