Does the thought of wearing conventional braces bother you? Perhaps you worry about your comfort during orthodontic treatment. Or maybe you dread wearing conspicuous orthodontic appliances like metal wires and brackets. If you think you need braces but don’t want to sacrifice your appearance or comfort, Invisalign might the perfect treatment option for you.
Invisalign is a clear and discreet alternative to conventional orthodontia. This orthodontic system can correct rotated and overlapped teeth as well as close gaps between them. Invisalign treatment consists of wearing appliances called “aligners”, which are constructed from clear, comfortable plastic.
What to Expect from Invisalign Treatment
Invisalign is designed for busy adults who want to correct the spacing of their teeth as inconspicuously as possible.
Treatment is divided into weekly phases, beginning with a consultation with an Invisalign-providing dentist. If a qualified oral healthcare provider recommends Invisalign, a patient can decide if this treatment meets their needs. After this point, molds and photos are taken of teeth to produce a patient’s custom aligners.
A set of aligners is worn for two weeks. Then, every two weeks, a new set is received. Each set of aligners is successively tighter than the set worn previously. An aligner will fit snuggly over teeth to create enough pressure to move teeth. Pressure and force is what generates tooth movement. As aligners become tighter, they can accommodate the positions of teeth while generating enough consistent pressure to create future tooth movement.
As treatment progresses, patients will notice obvious changes in the positioning of their teeth. For instance, gaps will close and crooked teeth will appear upright and straight.
Aligners are worn all day and night, save for meals and oral hygiene. Patients can remove their aligners to eat and clean their mouths without obstruction.
