Will I wear a retainer after Invisalign?

Invisalign is a popular method for moving teeth into alignment. The plastic trays used to shift teeth into place make it virtually invisible, unlike traditional braces, so it’s particularly popular among adults. If you have gaps between your teeth, crowding, or malocclusion, ask your dentist if this is an appropriate orthodontic treatment for your needs.
How Invisalign Works

Traditional braces use metal brackets and rubber bands to create tension that pulls the teeth gradually into place. Invisalign uses a series of custom-made trays of clear plastic. Each tray is shaped slightly differently from the previous tray in the series, so the teeth are shifted into their new position gradually as you wear the trays. Each tray is worn for about two weeks, then you move on to the next tray, which introduces another incremental change.

After you’ve completed your treatment—that is, reached the end of the sequence of aligner trays—you’ll need to wear a retainer to ensure your teeth don’t shift back out of their proper position. You might wear the last tray of your treatment sequence, or your orthodontist or dentist might provide a new tray. You’ll probably only have to wear the retainer at night. This is an important part of your treatment, since it makes sure the hard work you’ve done won’t be undone. Without the retainer, your teeth could naturally move back out of position.

Advantages of Invisalign

Many people, particularly adults, are attracted to Invisalign treatment because the trays are virtually invisible. No one has to know you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. The aligner trays also tend to be more comfortable than traditional metal braces. They have smooth edges, so you don’t have to worry about wires poking your lips or tongue. In addition, you can remove the trays for special occasions, although you shouldn’t leave them out of your mouth more than a couple of hours out of every 24-hour period.

It’s also important to care for your aligner trays properly. You shouldn’t expose them to hot foods or beverages that could warp the plastic, and you should avoid staining agents that could make the trays—and thus your teeth—look dingy.
